Malta Coastal Walk
155 km, 8 days
Circular walk starting and ending in Valletta, the fortified city dating back to the Order of Saint John.

Just like on Gozo, the main island of Malta has its circular walk. The guidebook – presumably still available - divides the walk in 13 sections.

Malta – you should know – is a densely populated island. It’s fascinating to view the Maltese shaping their country. But the downside for us walkers is that large parts of the coast are completely urbanised. Especially the northern part of the island is a concatenation of villages, suburbs and not too pretty hotel ghetto’s, always busy. The urbanisation is spreading quickly. Elsewhere along the coast, grounds can be claimed by private owners and investors, effectively blocking the entrance to walkers.

This being said, there will still be a good lot of enjoyment along this trail: the spectacular cliffs in the south, the birds and flowers in spring, the magic feeling as if one floats on a gigantic vessel in infinite waters.

If you like to combine walking with other enjoyments – good food, museums, archeologic sites – then this walk has a plus in store because you will run into all these things while walking. Also, the dense bus network and very regular bus services makes it easy to drop on and off the trail as you like.

Spring is the best time to go, March and April, but a winter walk is also a good idea. A not so good idea, is walking in summer.

The trail is not really signposted. In places, red paint will help you find the correct path or road.
