Gozo Coastal Walk / Round Gozo Coastal Walk

50km, 3 days

Circular walk starting and ending in Mgárr (where the ferry from Malta lands)

This 50km walk takes you round the coast of the island of Gozo, the smaller sibling of Malta. Much of this coast is still unspoilt. The path starts right from the ferry pier in Mgárr. The southern part has impressive cliffs, deep sea inlets and spectacular views. The western side is marked by the once-famous Azure Window. This natural arch collapsed during a storm in the spring of 2017. Even without the arch this is a magic place with lots of special wild flowers in spring. It gets busy fairly early in the morning, though. The northern coastline is less spectacular and somewhat more urbanised. The eastern part, near where the ferry lands, hides some very good spots.

Most of the time you will enjoy very good coastal scenery. The path will venture inland sometimes, giving you the opportunity to visit some of the villages. If you don’t like that, just continue along the coast; there will always be some kind of a path.

The walk is created on private initiative, although it seems to have some official status. Don’t expect good signage. The coastal path is dotted with red paint. Maybe you can obtain a specimen of the original hiking guide. It may be out of print, however. In some other walking guides, you may find a description of this circular walk. A map can be found on the internet.

Best time of the year is March and April. Flowers, green fields, fresh temperatures and already some  warmth of the sun. The walk is easy. Busses criss-cross the island on a regular basis; you don’t need to carry a tent.
